EDIT: the only reason I thought it was real was cos I thought a bot wouldn't have been able to get through the registration. _________________

Please don't reply to the spammers.
We're under a spam attack right now.
If their messages have been replied to that makes it harder for moderators to fix them.
Thanks. _________________ The mark of a good citizen is that he doesn't believe anything if he can help it.

There were only four spammers.
I've banned them and their e-mail addresses and deactivated them and removed all their permissions and deleted all their posts.
Only one of them had made more than one post.
I don't know how these people were able to register as users.
One had a Cyrillic username
Two had names like ??*??*??
one was named "hotelseek"
Their WWW website addresses made it pretty obvious they were selling shoes or tours to China or what-have-you.
Their posts were nonsense copied from other posts with a link to an ad inserted at random.
I do not know how to prevent this from happening again. If these were people they could just make a major change to their usernames and e-mail addresses and try again. If they were robots they probably won't be that creative, but some other robot might get past it. _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission

That's really bizarre.
Did I forget to close up the registration with a * when I registered Quillwraith?
If it was in there, hotelseek shouldn't have been able to register unless they found a way around it.
I think we need to implement a Q&A style captcha. Something conworlders would know, but that others would not (like famous authors, directors, etc).
I'll chat with Xhin about it next time I see him. |

Yes, your * was there when I checked.
Is it possible hotelseek and/or ?????? and/or the other multi-? guy and/or the Cyrillic guy just registered at exactly the time you had it open for quillwraith?
If that's not it, then, you're right, something needs to be done.
If that is it, though, maybe nothing needs to be done. _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission

It's very unlikely, since it was only open for a matter of a minute or two, and when I was finished I didn't see that they had registered. It is possible, though, I suppose.
Since we haven't had any more, maybe they did just slip in.
EDIT:
I opened it up for a few seconds, and changed hotelseek's name to Spammer. I didn't see any more slip in during that time.
Maybe it was a fluke. It would be nice to have a Q&A registration process anyway though. Sometimes it takes me a day to get an e-mail and do it manually. |
